Traditional Orthodontic Braces
Orthodontic braces are often prescribed to children who exhibit early signs of crooked teeth, or malocclusion. If not addressed, early malocclusion can lead to increasingly worse alignment as their primary and permanent teeth develop and grow. By undergoing interceptive orthodontic treatment early, children can enjoy healthier, more attractive smiles and avoid potentially serious oral health complications in the future. In some cases, adults with severely crooked teeth may also require traditional braces instead of more discreet Invisalign® aligners.
Important Notes About Orthodontics
Symmetry and balance are important for your bite and teeth to function properly. When teeth are crooked, your bite’s pressure can cause excessive wear and damage to your teeth. Also, compensating for the imbalance can overtax and damage your jaw joints and muscles. Braces improve tooth alignment to preserve the proper function of your bite.
Orthodontic braces consist of brackets that are bonded to teeth and connected by arch wire. Treatment consists of gradually moving teeth into straighter, more functional positions by applying gentle, continuous pressure through the brackets and wires.
While interceptive orthodontics can help catch and correct malocclusion early on, not all cases of crooked teeth develop so early. Older children, teens, and adults can develop crooked teeth for a variety of reasons, and braces may be necessary to restore their bite’s symmetry.
Though not considered braces, Dr. Walder can also help preserve your child’s tooth alignment if a primary tooth is lost prematurely. Because the underlying permanent tooth and oral structures are still developing, replacing the baby tooth may not be viable. However, with a custom-designed space maintainer, your child’s remaining baby teeth will not crowd the empty space and impede the growth of the adult tooth.
