Dental Checkups & Cleanings

Every six months (or more often, if necessary), you should schedule a routine dental checkup and cleaning appointment at our office. General dental visits serve a dual purpose – to keep track of changes in your dental health, and to professionally clean away bacteria-rich films of plaque and tartar. The cleaning helps prevent issues that arise from oral bacteria, like tooth decay and gum disease, while your examination helps your dentist diagnose and treat dental issues early, before they become serious threats.

Diagnosis

An accurate diagnosis is often vital to keeping your smile in excellent health. During your dental checkup, Dr. Nadella or Dr. Walder will perform a visual inspection of your teeth and oral tissues. Your dentist may also employ advanced technology, such as digital X-rays and an intraoral camera, to gain a more precise picture of your dental health. The examination will reveal signs of developing issues, if any are present, so that we can work with you to develop a custom, conservative dental treatment plan. Routine examinations can also help your dentist spot hard-to-notice signs of oral cancer, improving your chances of successful treatment through early detection.

Prevention

The majority of your hygiene efforts should occur at home in the form of brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice every day. Still, the deposits of plaque that your toothbrush and floss miss will eventually harden into tartar (also known as calculus), and will require professional cleaning to remove. During your dental cleaning, a skilled hygienist will carefully clean every surface of your teeth to remove the films of bacteria, helping you avoid the development of tooth decay and cavities, gingivitis and gum disease, chronic bad breath, and more.

Ultrasonic Scaling

Scaling and root planing is the process of removing bacteria from the surfaces of your teeth’s roots (scaling), then polishing the roots to hinder future bacteria accumulation (root planing). Known as periodontal cleaning, the procedure is recommended when patients exhibit early signs of gingivitis, which is a precursor to gum disease. For increased precision and comfort, we utilize ultrasonic technology to break up plaque and tartar less invasively than traditional scaling and root planing.
