Checking Up on Your Oral Health
You should schedule a dental exam with us at least twice a year. These visits serve two purposes: to monitor your dental health and to address any issues early before they advance and require more intensive treatments. When you visit us for your exam, a dentist will perform a visual inspection of your teeth and oral tissues. We may also use dental technology, like digital X-rays and an intraoral camera, to get a more precise picture of your oral structures.
Oral Cancer Screening
Every year, over 50,000 Americans get diagnosed with oral or oropharyngeal cancer. It often goes unnoticed by people because there are not any signs or pain until it reaches an advanced stage, sometimes in another part of the body. During your dental exam, we will carefully and thoroughly check for signs of cancer, like sores, lesions, wounds that are not healing, and ulcers. While at home, if you notice any rough spots or lumps in your mouth, experience numb or tender lips, or have difficulty speaking or chewing, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can take a closer look at your mouth. Detecting oral cancer early is important in order to develop a plan to successfully treat it.
