What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial teeth that consist of three parts: titanium posts, metal abutments, and a customized dental restoration. They can replace any number of missing teeth and replace them with a crown, bridge, or denture. These uniquely designed prosthetics mimic the look of a screw but deliver the same function as a normal tooth root, which is to stimulate the jawbone to prevent additional tooth and bone loss.
This root-to-crown restorative capability is what makes it superior to other forms of tooth replacement and why millions of people have chosen dental implants to rebuild their smiles.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

The dental implant process is not the kind of treatment that happens overnight. There are four steps that each patient must take to experience the benefits of these custom prosthetics: the initial consultation, dental implant surgery, osseointegration and abutment, and receiving the final restoration. As you move through each phase, you can expect Dr. Nadella and our team to remain by your side.
- Initial Dental Implant Consultation – We will examine your oral health to determine if any additional treatments are required, such as bone grafting, tooth extraction, or gum disease treatment. We’ll also evaluate your overall health to find out if you’re in good enough shape to undergo dental implant surgery. Finally, we’ll determine the density of your jawbone and whether it can support your new set of teeth.
- Dental Implant Surgery – The placement of your dental implants will begin with you receiving local anesthesia to numb your mouth. Each titanium post will then be placed into the jawbone and positioned for maximum support. Your gums will then be closed before protective healing caps are placed over them in preparation for recovery at home.
- Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – Osseointegration is the third phase, which requires 4-6 months to complete. This is the time your implants need to fuse with the jawbone to create a firm foundation for your new smile. Once you’re fully healed, we will need to place your metal abutments, which will help hold your restoration in place.
- Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – The last step is the most exciting part – the retrieval of your custom restoration. Whether it is a crown, bridge, or denture, Dr. Nadella will decide during your initial consultation, basing his decision on how many teeth you are missing. You can expect your new teeth to look natural and work just like the rest of your smile.
Benefits of Dental Implants

If you were to ask Dr. Nadella about the benefits of dental implants, there is a good chance one of the first advantages he would mention is their root-to-crown restorative capabilities. This cannot be accomplished by dentures or dental bridges. This unique aspect allows for greater stability while eating the foods you love, a longer-lasting smile (can remain in place for a lifetime), and the chance to embrace a more confident, youthful appearance. With the addition of dental implants, you’ll worry less about bone loss and facial collapse and enjoy a better quality of life.
