Types of Dentures

At Columbia Dental & Orthodontics, we offer three types of dentures: full, partial, and implant. While the first two are traditional prosthetics that do not require surgery to place, the latter uses titanium posts that must be positioned within the jawbone for maximum stability.
During a consultation with Dr. Nadella, he will go over the three options to determine which one aligns with your smile needs. If you are without multiple teeth along an arch, you may only require a partial denture. Crafted from a gum-colored acrylic base and artificial teeth, it fits like a puzzle piece once in place and attaches to healthy abutment teeth using metal clasps or clips.
If one or both of your arches are without any teeth, a full denture can be crafted using the same materials as a partial except no metal framework is required. Instead, the prosthetics will sit on top of your gums and rely on natural suction to hold them in place. If desired, you can choose to use denture adhesive for added stability.
While full and partial dentures do not require an invasive approach for placement, implant dentures do. Relying on 4-6 titanium posts that are surgically placed in the jawbone, they fuse with the nearby tissues to create a firm foundation for your new smile. Their structural integrity allows them to support a custom-made denture that attaches to the metal abutments, allowing you to enjoy a smile that can last a lifetime with the right level of care.
Benefits of Dentures

Whether it’s being able to eat the foods you enjoy, speak clearly, or feel confident in the way you look, dentures continue to provide endless benefits. Some of these include:
- Embracing an improved physical and psychological state because of how dentures make you look and feel. You’ll not only appreciate seeing a full smile in the mirror but you’ll also be elated at the mental and emotional boost you’ll experience when seeing how a complete smile positively impacts your daily life.
- Enjoying more nutrient-rich foods that improve your overall health and well-being. Instead of struggling to bite down and chew, you’ll be able to consume fruits, vegetables, meat, and other foods that deliver vital nutrients to your brain, body, and smile.
- Clearer speech because of how dentures help your tongue, cheeks, and lips work together to form sounds and words that were once difficult if not impossible to pronounce. You’ll be able to present before the board at your workplace or speak in a way that brings a smile to your grandchild’s face.
- Better oral health, as dentures help keep natural teeth in place and minimize potential damage by creating a more balanced bite. Instead of worrying about enamel erosion caused by daily wear and tear, dentures will safeguard the rest of your smile as well as slow the progression (or stop) of jawbone resorption.
