What Happens During a Root Canal?
Preserving your natural tooth is our priority, which is why we recommend root canal treatment for those who are severely damaged or infected. The process begins with us administering local anesthesia and nitrous oxide sedation if required. We’ll then isolate the tooth to prevent any moisture from reaching the space before creating a small opening in the crown.
Using specialized dental instruments, we will clear out the interior of the tooth, including the root canals and pulp chamber. Once we have removed the infected pulp, we will sterilize the area so that no bacteria remain. We’ll then place gutta-percha, which is a biocompatible substance that replaces the former pulp before sealing off the tooth from possible reinfection. After a few weeks, we will have a customized dental crown created and ready to place over the treated tooth for maximum protection.
