Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening

Question: Why do our teeth become stained?

Answer: A variety of factors can lead to discoloration, such as age or smoking/tobacco use. Other causes can include foods high in sugar and other starches, which promote plaque buildup, or drinks containing dark pigments, such as tea, soda, red wine, fruit juice, or coffee. Intrinsic stains, which form below the tooth enamel, can occur as a result of injury to the tooth, fluorosis, or the use of certain medications, such as tetracycline.

Question: How does teeth whitening work?

Answer: We provide the patients with a set of trays and a powerful bleaching gel. Each day, the tray is filled with gel and worn for a set amount of time that the dentist recommends. Optimal results my take between a week and ten days and in some cases, can brighten smiles by multiple shades.

Question: How do we ensure our new results last?

Answer: With proper oral hygiene you can help teeth stay brighter for longer. We suggest brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day. You should also have your teeth professionally cleaned by the dentist or hygienist once every six months. You can also quit smoking and cut back on drinks containing dark pigments.

Question: What if my discoloration doesn’t respond to whitening?

Answer: In some cases, intrinsic stains may not respond to teeth whitening. If this is the case we can help mask the stains with a restoration, such as porcelain veneers.
