When you see an OTC (over the counter) item that promises to do amazing things for your smile, you may find yourself completely torn. On one hand, this sounds very convenient and the payoff sounds exciting! However, it also seems like the kind of thing that we will quickly suggest you avoid. The truth is: There are different types of OTC products out there, some of which are beneficial and some of which are not. To ensure you’re making wise choices, we typically encourage you to run such things by us first. As for some common products and questions, let’s give you some much needed information.
Questions and Answers
Question: Which types of OTC products are safe for my smile?
Answer: Generally speaking, unless we have instructed you otherwise, the only things you should be purchasing for your smile over-the-counter include toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss, and mouthwash.
Question: What’s so bad about OTC teeth whitening? I see it advertised all the time!
Answer: It isn’t personalized for your specific needs, it may dehydrate your teeth, it isn’t powerful enough to yield exceptional brightening results, and it can irritate and damage gum and dental tissue.
Question: Is it okay to use temporary OTC products like a temporary filling?
Answer: If you’re going to use something like a temporary filling or numbing gel, you may use only as directed and as a “band aid” option to keep your smile comfortable until you can see us. However, attempting to treat your own smile or to use such treatments for an extended period of time is never suggested.
